Tesla Shifts Focus from Car Production to Robotics, Phasing Out Model S and X
Elon Musk announced Tesla will discontinue production of its Model S sedan and Model X SUV by mid-2026, reallocating factory space to ramp up Optimus robot manufacturing. The move underscores Musk's vision to transform Tesla into a broader technology company focused on autonomy.
Tesla's consumer vehicle lineup will now consist of the Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck, alongside development of a new Roadster. "It's slightly sad, but time to bring the S and X programs to an end," Musk stated during an earnings call, framing the decision as part of Tesla's strategic pivot toward an autonomous future.
The production shift highlights Tesla's evolving identity beyond automotive manufacturing. With Optimus robots positioned as a key growth driver, Musk is betting heavily on robotics and AI—a sector increasingly intersecting with blockchain and decentralized technologies.
